Festival 1999 Events

The Festival Unfolded:
Pre-Hydrangea Festival Events
August 10th – 15th, 1999
White Rock's Beach, Semiahmoo Mall, and Centennial Arena.
 

Blue Theme Draw Event
Date:  August 13th through 15th, 1999 
Location:  Find us between the pier and the White Rock, Friday evening and all day 
         Saturday and Sunday. 
Blue skies, ocean and hydrangea flowers set our theme color.  Dressed in blue as the dominant color for Hydrangea Festival Day celebrations, from August 13th to 15th, 1999 and qualified to enter our draw for prizes including art works, gardening products, sports bags, and much more.  Draw was at 5pm Sunday.  Free event. 

Strolling Flower Show
Dates:  August 10th through 15th, 1999         Time:  No Time Restriction. 
Enjoyed strolling by the mall and nearby shops on Johnston Road to see beautiful and unique floral designs in shop windows.  Awards in place on Wednesday, August 11th, 1999.  Free event. 

Floral Float Decorating (for Parade Float Crews & Volunteers) 
Dates: August 10th  – 13th ,1999                Time: 8:00am – 10:00pm 
Location:  Centennial Arena at 14600 North Bluff (16th Ave.), White Rock. 
Floral float decorating volunteers in blue colors can also qualified for the blue theme draw to win prizes.  Draws took place August 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th, 1999 in evenings, in Centennial Arena.  Volunteers and float crews were welcome to help flower floats in shifts. 
People 13 years and over, wishing to volunteer please phone:  (604) 531-2731.  Experience is not needed.

Floral Float Decorating (for Parade Float Crews & Volunteers)
Dates: August 10 – 13th                Time:  8:00am – 10:00pm 
Location:  Centennial Arena at 14600 North Bluff Road (16th Ave.), White Rock. 
Volunteers and float crews are welcome to help flower floats in shifts. 
People 13 years and over, who wished to volunteer can drop in for 4 hour shifts, or so.  Phone: (604) 531-2731 before August 10th, 1999.  (Experience is not needed.) 

Tours of Floral Float Decorating 
Date:  August 13th ,1999         Time: 12:00 (noon) - 9:30pm. 
Location:  For the public to view inside Centennial Arena. 
It's a happening!  Come and watch, or take part.  View and photograph volunteers decorating the floral entries for Canada's 1st All-Floral Parade.  Floral scents are free. 
Admission Fee: Children to12 years = free;  Adults = $2.00 
                          13 years to18 years = $1.00;  Seniors (65 years and over) = free 

Food Bank Concession Stand 
Date:  August 13th ,1999 (Friday)    Time:  11:00am – 9:30pm 
Location:  Outside Centennial Arena at 14600 North Bluff Road (16th Ave.), White Rock. 
Sponsors:  Surrey Food Bank. 
Donations for the food bank are gladly accepted here. 

Decorated Vehicles Pre-Parade Event
Date:  August 13th, 1999          Time:  12:00 (noon) – 9:30pm 
Location:  Near Centennial Arena's entrance at 14600 North Bluff Road (16th Ave.), 
       White Rock. 
Observe vehicles undergoing floral decorating with bouquets and garlands.  Outdoor, free event with observation from a distance. 

Composting and Recycling Event 
Date:    August 13th, 1999       Time:  12:00 (noon) – 12:00 (midnight) 
Location:  Centennial Arena at 14600 North Bluff Road (16th Ave.), White Rock. 
Event:  Sharing information on composting.  Volunteers assist in gathering flowers, 
      and greens for clean up of Centennial Arena, to use in future composts.

2nd Annual Hydrangea Blossom
Horseshoe Introductory Tournament
Date:  August 13, 1999            Time: 6:00pm – 7:30pm 
Location:  Centennial Arena outdoor horseshoe area at 14600 North Bluff Road (16th 
        Ave.), White Rock.

or George Cooke, (604) 531-9223.]  Drawing for Prizes.  Free event, for all ages from 6 years and over. 

Hot Air Balloon Rides (on a tether)
Date: August 13th, 1999          Time:  7pm – 9pm (weather permitting) 
Location:  Centennial Park's Soccer Field next to Centennial Arena and the floral float 
         decorating. 
Bring cameras to record, and view spectacular scenes of a glowing balloon at sunset. 
Cost:  Adult = $3.00 / person; Children to 12 years = $1.00 / person to ride in the balloon. 

Convoy of Floral Floats and Vehicle Entries
Dates: August 13th and 14th, 1999        Time: 11:45pm – 2:00am 
Location:  Begins at Centennial Arena and continues to parade start on Nichol, 
          near Marine Drive.  Convoy by 4 Wheel Drive Clubs and individuals from the 
          Pacific Northwest, and local Community Police Volunteers 
Sponsors:  4 Wheel Drive Clubs of North America, with special guests from the Pacific 
        North West 4 Wheel Drive Association, Region 3 (Portland, Oregon Grand Floral 
        Parade convoy vehicles). 

Titanic Adventure Slide & Inter-Active Challenge Games
Dates:  August 13th, 1999           Time:  6:00pm – 9:00pm 
Location:  West end of White Rock's Beach. 
Bring your cameras, friends and family to ride down the 30 foot slide and survive, the iceberg climb on the newest, most popular challenge course game in town. 
Admission Fee:  Adult = $2.00/ person; Children to 12 years = $1.00/ person (Children are limited to height requirements.) 



Saturday's Hydrangea Festival Events

Public Assembly For Parade Viewing 
Date:  August 14th, 1999          Time:  5:00am – 8:00am 
Location:  Parade goers arrive to set up chairs and benches along White Rock's 
           Marine Drive area next to the sea side. Route starts at Nichol Road and Marine 
           Drive to the border of Surrey at East Beach, and along 8th Avenue in Surrey to 
           160th Street and Stayte Road. 
           Note:  This is a straight line parade route next to the West and East Beaches by the 
           White Rock Pier.  Parking will be designated within walking or shuttle distances. 
           Prepare for some walking.  For special needs order shuttle in  advance.  Please

5K Hydrangea Run ( approximately 3 miles )
Date:  August 14th, 1999           Time:  8:00am – 8:50am 
Location: Races follow the parade route one hour before the parade begins. 
Hydrangea run, walk, or jog for everyone, costumes and face make up welcome.  Competitive 5K races start first. Wheel chairs welcomed.  Snail Fun Runs follow.

Snail Fun Run/ Walk
Date:  August 14, 1999               Time:  8:10am 
Location:  Races follow the parade route before the parade begins. 
Theme:  Wear blue colors, costumes, face paintings or simply come in your running clothes and enjoy running, jogging, and walking along one of the most scenic parade routes in Canada, 50 minutes before the parade begins.  A great event for all age groups and families.  Prizes and certificates will be given to winners.

Canada's First All–Floral Parade 
Date:  August 14th, 1999              Time:  9:00am – 10:30am 
Location:  Begins on the west side of White Rock's Marine Drive at Nichol Road and 
        Continues east to Surrey.   Parade ends at 8th Avenue and 160th Street (Stayte Road). 
        Note:  Bring chairs for comfort, and hats and lotion for protection from the sun. 
        Remember this great event by bringing lots of film and your camera.  Restaurants, 
        Ice Cream Shops, and Fish & Chip Shops are all along Marine Drive and 8th 
        Avenue.

Misting Tent
Dates: August 14th and 15th, 1999            Time:  11:00am – 6:00pm 
Location:  West end of White Rock Beach. 
Misting Tent open for public use on West Beach, White Rock. Cool off with a bit of mist from clean and clear White Rock well water.  Free Event.

                  and ARRYNS mist u, Outdoor Cooling Systems. 

Artists and Craftspeople
Dates:  August 14th and 15th, 1999             Time:  11:00am – 6:00pm 
Location: West end of White Rock Beach. 
Artists and Craftspeople open up their display areas along the beach walk.  Look for demonstrations and art in action, too.  Lots of garden theme creations are available.

Tent and Booth Activities With Samplings By The Sea
Date:  August 14th and 15th, 1999              Time:  11:00am – 6:00pm 
Location:  West end of White Rock Beach. 
Try complimentary samples while enjoying the Marine Drive and Promenade-by-the sea festivities. 

Boat Demonstrations
Date:  August 14th and 15th, 1999             Time:  12:00 (noon) – 1:30pm 
Location:  White Rock Pier. 
Enjoy viewing boat and wind sport groups using oars and sails while they present interesting formations and contests of skills.  Free event. 

Post Parade All Floral Float Display
Dates:  August 14th and 15th, 1999            Time:  1:00pm – 4:00pm 
Location:  Semiahmoo Mall Parking Lot at 152nd Street, 16th to 17th Avenues.  Free 
         Event. 
View floral floats and vehicles close up and photograph these beautiful entries after the floral parade.  Great shopping at the Mall, too.

Volunteer "Thank You" Lunch
Date:  August 14th, 1999             Time:  1:00pm – 2:30pm 
Location:  Hydrangea Festival Tents on the west side of White Rock's Pier entrance. 
All volunteers listed with the Hydrangea Festival are welcome.  Awards and prizes will be given at this lunch.

African Hand Drums
Leader:  Mr. Dido Morris of "Have Drums Will Travel", along with his group of 10 to 15 
              Drummers. 
Date:  August 14th, 1999           Time:  2:30pm – 3:30pm 
Location:  Stage next to Information Kiosk by White Rock's Museum on Marine Drive.

A Jam Session of Vehicle Horns and Drums
Leader:  Mr. Dido Morris of "Have Drums Will Travel", along with his group of 10 to 15 
              Drummers. 
Date:  August 14th, 1999            Time:  3:00pm – 3:10pm 
Location:  Same Stage area as above. 
A ten minute Jam Session in remembrance of  Terry Fox.  He enjoyed the encouragement of passing vehicle's horns being honked as he attempted to run across Canada on one leg to raise funds for cancer research.  (This is now known as The Terry Fox Run Foundation, with annual fund raising runs in September.)  Representatives from the Terry Fox Run Foundation will be in attendance to hand out information on the September, 1999 run.
