Surrey Hydrangea Blossom Festival in Year 2001

During the year of 2001, a new pageant was introduced by the Surrey Hydrangea Blossom Festival. "Little Miss Hydrangea," contest opened up for girls from 5 to 10 years of age. The idea was to have 4 finalists as good will ambassadors throughout the following year. 19 girls took part; with Julia Poole doing a superb job as coordinator for the contest.

All the children dressed to match the Festival's theme, "Friends Around The World." A large mural of Hydrangeas decorated the stage, with over 100 in the outdoor audience. Each girl did a few minutes of entertainment, and each one was also judged for poise, politeness, and personality. Everyone received prizes from many sponsors, along with the 4 finalists winning silver trophies and floral bouquets.

The girls all rode in Surrey's Hydrangea Festival Floral Parade, and many danced and entertained on stage at the Festival on August 25th. The Floral Parade gave away 21 awards to floral decorated vehicles and parade entrants. This was the first year all floral decorating took place indoors, in a large show barn on Cloverdale's Rodeo and Exhibition Grounds. Thanks to having this floral decorating building, all entrants had a great time decorating and celebrating life the day before the parade, by sharing all their flowers as one big community.

All of Greater Vancouver home gardeners from Richmond to Chilliwack are invited to donate their flowers growing in their own gardens. It is quite a sight to see large vans drive up with freely donated flowers filling the back, from floor to ceiling. Usually these vehicle's owners warn us they are coming back with another load of flowers the next day. The Surrey Hydrangea Festival's Floral Parade is very unique in North America, since almost all flowers and greenery are donated by the community in the whole of Greater Vancouver.

Guests flew in specially to see this floral parade from Hawaii, and the USA. The Hydrangea Festival had a great, sunny day, with excellent stage entertainment, clowns, flower experts, art and craft booths, non-profit organization interactive booths, children's rides, foods, wild birds, dogs, cats, and other interesting international displays. Many politicians and civic leaders helped to open the celebrations. Almost all the vehicles and floats stayed fully decorated with flowers and were kept on display for the full day at the Cloverdale Rodeo Grounds, Millennium Amphitheatre Park.

Other events the Surrey Hydrangea Festival took part in during 2001 were: decorating floral floats at Portland's Grand Floral Parade; all the activities listed in year 2000; and taking part in Green Timber's Teddy Bear Picnic. All were great!
